Choosing your Wedding Dress

I am not a woman, although I can understand the difficulty that comes with choosing the perfect wedding gown to wear on your big day. There was a time when it was very common for a bride to wear her mother’s dress. A sweet tradition, but that was then and this is now ! Wearing something old like a blue handkerchief from your mother will be thoughtful enough and so you’ll just have to borrow something, and you will be all set ! The good luck will rub on you !

No matters what, every bride needs to  keep in consideration her body shape. It might sound like an obvious thought, but not every dress was made for every bride. The dress has to fit—and fit well. It should play up a bride’s shape; too loose or too tight is never flattering.  A perfectly fitted dress can transform any bride into a princess. So If you are planning to kick start the gym routine and loosing a couple of pounds, make sure you notify the seamstress over the months to ensure a perfect fit on your day.

A dress with a scooped neckline will open up your face without showing too much cleavage. If you have some sexy curves to celebrate, go for a mermaid style dress . For a more modest look try an empire dress with a skirt that begins just under the bust and flows into a gradual floor-length A-line.  Don’t over-do it, less is definitely more. Sleeve are very dated, while trains always add drama to your look. You will most likely need the help of your bridesmaids to get into your dress.

One of my favorite designers is the ever iconic Vera Wang, known for her wide range of haute couture wedding gown collections. She started as senior fashion editor for Vogue In the early 70’s.  She has created gowns for many well-known celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Kim Kardashian and Michelle Obama. The cost for the luxury collection ranges between 8000-12000€.  However the ‘White by Vera Wang’ line offers a more affordable way to wear Vera’s designs and launched with gowns beginning as low as 1000€. Check out her collection online, there may be one for you !

Steven Khalil is known as the most luxurious designer in Australia. He rose rapidly through several bridal houses and was appointed Head Designer at early age. Steven has developed an approach that is tailored to each individual by establishing a personal partnership with every bride to craft a wedding dress that perfectly encapsulates her day. Angel Sanchez is another famous designer from Venezuela. The overall designs have a tender and delicate approach that can feature hand painted silk gauze, bold hot pink,  ruffled capelets and soft asymmetrical that highlights an edgy quality. He has designed wedding dresses for many famous people including Beyonce and Sandra Bullock to name a few. The price range is more affordable than most offerings, running between 500-1200€.

Jenny Packham is a fashion designer from the United Kingdom. who established her brand in 1988. Her creations were  regularly featured on the show “Sex and the City”. She has recently added a lingerie line and bridal accessories. Some of her clients include celebrities like Eva Longoria, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie,  and Cameron Diaz,  Her latest gown was an asymmetrical gown fully encrusted with Swarovski crystals.

Galia Lahav is a world-renowned designer solidly established in haute couture dresses for more than 30 years. She was born in Russia and received her education in Israel.  She is recognized in Israel and abroad for her unique and luxurious designs of bridal and evening dresses. The spectacular collections feature small details, meticulous sewing quality and luxurious European imported fabrics. In 2008, Galia designed the dresses for the television show “Dancing with the stars ». Dresses range from $6,000 – $19,500 depending upon the model.

Pnina Tornai is a very famous designer from New York who only sells her dresses at  Kleinfeld. Everything about her design esthetic is completely different from any other gown you have ever seen.  Instead of traditional white,  she likes to use silver, champagne or even bolder colors. You can expect a one of a kind piece of couture from this cutting edge designer!

Whether you decide to purchase from a bridal shop or have it tailor made, the whole process takes considerable time.  Depending upon the designer or store, you can expect a wait time of 4 to 9months before receiving your gown.  If you are undecided between two perfect gowns, some brides opt to purchase both and change during the evening.
